Legacy of Magna Carta Celebrated in the New Zealand House of Representatives: 16 June

On June 16th David Seymour, Leader of the ACT Party and Member of Parliament, took leave to move a motion without notice to mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta.

“I move, that this House note the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, a document that Lord Denning described as ‘ … the greatest constitutional document of all times—the foundation of the freedom of the individual against the arbitrary authority of the despot.’, and that established the notion that the law is not simply the whim of the king or of Government, and that all are equal under the law and can be held to account, and thus, Magna Carta represents the foundation of the rights and freedoms that we enjoy today.” Mr Seymour noted.
